The work is astounding in its process: threads of multiple colors are woven and sewn into volumetric shapes that remind us of intricate swallow nests we find in eaves. And the image of a nest is what we actually find in this work by Raffy Napay. On one panel an avian egg looms from a dense forest of thread, in a whole within a tree. The simplicity of the imagery however is belied by the tactile quality of the pieces. The texture and mass of the work is complemented by the artist’s use of warm and cool colors that overlap one another within. Seemingly a work dedicated to the nurturing power of parental affection, Napay’s quiet, straightforward and enchantingly simple iconography hits home.
