The work is astounding in its process: threads of multiple colors are woven and sewn into volumetric shapes that remind us of intricate swallow nests we find in eaves. And the image of a nest is what we actually find in this pair of works by Raffy Napay. On one panel a gigantic pair of avian eggs looms from a dense forest of thread. In its wake two birds with human feet stand together as a couple and the words “I Love” are formed by the intersections of finely articulated branches. The simplicity of the imagery however is belied by the tactile quality of the pieces. The texture and mass of the work is complemented by the artist’s use of warm and cool colors that overlap one another within. The plumages of the “birds” alone constitute several hues, and they resemble the fine feathers of a rooster’s chest. Seemingly a work dedicated to the nurturing power of parental affection, Napay’s quiet, straightforward and enchantingly simple iconography hits home.
