Ryan Villamael is one of the few contemporary Filipino artists who works on paper-cutting, a traditional Philippine art form, which he introduced to the contemporary art scene. Of this work, the artist explains: "[it represents] the old forgotten Pagoda in Quiapo, Manila. I've always been fascinated with history, most especially of the city where I live in, which is Manila. These old forgotten wonderful buildings used to crowd the streets of Manila and reflected how people used to live their lives in those days. But with years of neglect and corrupted politics, it is unknown how these structures from the past will coexist with the rapid change of "urban development". This series of works is my love letter to my city, which is now forgetting its glorious past."
